To expand on the brief description of the SkySafari 3 app, I’m pasting in the comments that I made when SkySafari Lite, the earlier version of this app, became available as an app deal last year. These statements largely also apply to SkySafari 3. Note that on the iPhone there are two pages of button controls at the bottom of the screen, so use a three-finger swipe to the right to get to the second page (e.g., to find the “Help” button that is the last element on the page if you’ve scrolled to “page 2 of 2″), and a three finger swipe to the left to return to the first page of button controls.

Accessibility Comments (written for SkySafari Lite): Although this is a planetarium program app for exploring the night sky, it works extremely well as an education app for learning about astronomy. You can use the “Search” button to learn about stars, planets, moons, and galaxies along with concepts like date and time. I wrote an extensive post about using this app in response to a query on the viphone list from someone who wanted an app that would describe the moons, sun, and planets that were visible at any time, and where they were located in the sky. This app does quite a bit more, and can be used just for educational information about planets, stars, galaxies, etc. The one warning is that links in the information description are almost always to large version images. Either avoid double tapping these links within detailed text descriptions or, if you do, recover by toggling VoiceOver off with triple-click Home, then double tap in the center of the screen, and then toggle VoiceOver back on with triple click Home again. This is a universal binary app.

When choosing languages, the selection on the right is for the language you already speak and the language on the left is the translated language. For being a Google app. I must admit I was surprised in how accessible this app was.

A bit odd of an app but indeed original. If you like to keep in the loop with your friends in what you are doing and the things you have achieved. This would be for you.

It is another odd adaptation for the Social Networking realm but I do admit it presents some good ideas to do. So if you are bored and want something to do and don’t know what to do. Then check this out.

ok, to make it so you can use the ringtones you download you have to follow these steps. plug your phone/pod/pad into itunes. select your iphone from the list. go to the aps tab, go down to the file sharing aps section go down to ringtone +++ in that section go to the right and you’ll find all your ringtones displayed. select them all and click the save to button. save them to a folder of your choice. go into said folder and open them all in itunes. go to the ringtones section and you’ll see your ringtones. sink. enjoy!

Accessibility Comments

Although VoiceOver will read most page elements, there are large areas of this app where the swipe or read all gestures do not work. This means that you have to tap directly on an element for VoiceOver to find it. With the app containing so many buttons, controls and various other elements, this can be very hit and miss, and you can rarely be sure that you have found every element on a page. This is particularly true when adding a new item, as there are a number of buttons directly below the text field that are quite small and tricky to locate. Finding these buttons can take you to another problem, as some of these open up a selection picker where VoiceOver does not read the selection options. If you edit an existing item, the app appears to use lists for these variables rather than a picker, and these are accessible.

With time and a lot of patience you could use this app with VoiceOver. Despite this, I think the level of workarounds required mean that the app has to be rated as inaccessible.

Other Comments

I have heard of people using this app with VoiceOver. However, the release notes for this version indicate that there has been a major overhaul of the interface. I’m guessing this has introduced most of the issues mentioned above.
